Use compressed images, the less plugins means faster load times. Obviously smaller file sizes as well. If you write your site in a dedicated Class, then you can just call whichever functions you need via separate pages, and one CSS file, rather than copying pasting the same code throughout pages. You can reduce average file size from 200kb to 5kb. Not much, especially with today's technology but perhaps on a phone it's noticeable.

Try cutting down on fancy web page junk. Do you really need hoverable drop-down menus, and those 7 JS templates like backbone.js, angular.js etc.

Does your home page have a dumb animated GIF that is 5-10mb in size, and not really used for much of anything at all?

Well I am assuing that you are using WordPress as your CMS in such case all you need to open any online speed analysis tool like page insight or  gtmetrix or pingdom. Enter your website and see how many technical issues are there. if you are technical enough to fix them then fix it and re-run the audit until you achieve 90+ score on any of these site. Secondly you also check out your website with seohealthcheck to see if there are any other issues. Well as far as my experience is concern I have seen several people website the most common issues found is using a low quality hosting provider. Folks generally recommend to use a quality hosting to help you to invest less in optimization. Anyways all the best. Don't forget to use a quality caching plugin. Cheers

It's not the newest thread but a helpful one.

Use all the tools you can find to validate your website. Some examples:
- google page speed - !!!
- microsoft sonarwhal
- woorank
- gtmetrix
- w3c validator
- pingdom
- websitechecker pro
- webpagetest

basically anything you can find

Hello I am looking for ways to optimize load speeds for site . I installed a plugin to smush the images. Please let me know other ways.

Depending on your server you can use certain codes the .htaccess file to speed up your server.

here is such an example

# Expire images header
ExpiresActive On
ExpiresDefault A0
ExpiresByType image/gif A2592000
ExpiresByType image/png A2592000
ExpiresByType image/jpg A2592000
ExpiresByType image/jpeg A2592000
ExpiresByType image/ico A2592000
ExpiresByType text/css A2592000
ExpiresByType text/javascript A2592000

# compress text, html, javascript, css, xml:
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/javascript
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript

# Or, compress certain file types by extension:
<files *.html>
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
</files>

To optimize website loading speed these are few steps:

1. Reduce network latency: Keep your server infrastructure as close to your target audience. Say you want to create a website for ticket booking in India, you should not have the server infrastructure in US

2. Reduce page load: Ensure to minify\zip all your static files like CSS,JS.

3. Image : If you are having responsive website ensure that you don't load a desktop image for a mobile view port.

4. Caching: Try to cache all your static business look up data inside your application server.

Any suggestions on who to hire for this.  Seems I break the site or have to use a plugin to get it done.  Plugins definitely slow the site down.
