I thought I was doing the right thing in using the free through announcement for my site from here. All I have gotten is spammers. Sorry I forgot the LP link but was lp's free stuff. I am slamming at least 8, sometimes 14 spammers each day. How do I correct this?

Would you please explain in more detail. Gmail is not associated with Lunarpages though you can use them to host your website email.

I merely mean that the majority of spammers I get on my forum are using gmail. I should have left out any reference to LP. Sorry about that. I have my SMF forum set up for the last 5 years so that anyone joining needs Admin approval so that I can run down the IP before accepting any posting on my forum. I guess what I am asking is: Do I need to ban gmail?

I use gmail myself as do millions of other legitimate users and businesses so I would not suggest it.

One way to cut down on spam for forums is to require " email verification authentication" before an account is created.

With this, an email will be sent to the email address being signed up from and then the person has to click on a link to activate the account before they post.

Then you can also include captcha as part of the signup process.

If possible also ban certain phrases, look at the spam you have already received, determine the best words/phrases to use.

SMF 2.0 has the ability to require a question be answered before someone can register. It helps a lot although, it is best to change the question occasionally.

On a forum I had I banned all signatures and links until a poster had around 25 posts.

I installed a mod that would even remove anything starting with www or http or ending in .com.
It basically left the spammers helpless because the post would not submit, the poster simply got an error message saying not allowed until 25 posts.

Most good forum software has similar controls or mods that can be installed. After that I had little to no spam.

Banning hotmail, gmail or yahoo is not the answer because like katrina said, you would be prohibiting lots of legitimate users from joining.

Thanks for the constructive replies. Although I have been successful with the mechanics of my forum, I am in a mind learning state with a new whole lot of stuff. it is numbing as I know a little but not a lot. Thank you for seeing my weaknesses and responding with positives. As always on LP, it is appreciated.
