What is the best open source commerce solution?
« on: August 04, 2009, 08:53:30 PM »
I need help selecting an open source commerce solution for a smallish online business. I like the features of magento, but everythign Ihave read said that customization is difficult, support is scarce and the system is slow. So that is out.  i Have used Ubercart and drupal, and found it not that features rich. So I am looking at oscommerce and zen-cart. Any thoughts on these or other solutions I should look at?

thanks

I would highly suggest demoing some of the scripts in question here -

http://opensourcecms.com/

That way you can get a feel for both the admin sections and how the store will look to the customers too, minus your own customizations.

I would highly suggest using Joomla and Virtuemart, this system together works great.
If you want to see a demo go here: http://www.lunarpages-website-package3.com/
Click on the shop our store menu item to see the shopping cart integration with Joomla.

I found this online.  Hope it helps!

The cart developer has developed a 2Checkout module you may use a shopping cart with your 2Checkout account. More information on supported carts may be found here. Because our purchase routine acts as a cart, it is not required that you install a cart on your website in order to use 2Checkout.

We also have our own set of proprietary parameters if you wish to design a custom cart for your website. You may find more information on the supported parameter sets and the plug-n-play cart here.

If you are a cart developer and wish to create a 2Checkout.com. module, you may wish to contact integration@2checkout.com for assistance and certification that your cart is compatible with 2Checkout.com. If your cart has been certified we will be able to add the cart to the list of recommended carts. You may also benefit from making use of our developers.2Checkout area to check out the various parameter sets and how they work, as well as test the development of your return and INS script(s).

Its true that magento can be difficult in terms of customization. Zen cart or oscommerce can be good if you are lacking in terms of technical skills. There is Shopping cart software site that displays shopping cart softwares with their features and functions. This will help you review and compare each features of the shopping cart oscommerce, magento, zencart. It may help you choose shopping cart for your business.

I think store sprite is a powerful, free PHP/MySQL shopping cart system that is easy to install and customize.  The Cart is free but it does have copyright notices that you can pay to get rid of.  StoreSprite has many features including automatic tax calculation, automatic delivery cost calculations, customer ratings and reviews and featured products.

There are so many out there, that choosing a single one can be hard, and everyone will have a preference (I actually like oscommerce)

What i would recommend is installing a few different versions into subfolders on your account, then try them each out.

Once you choose the one you like, uninstall the ones you do not want and then do a redirect of your site to the one that you do like.

Magento is a best open source e-commerce software, which offer different flexibility and different features and control. Magento is awesome, I would never believe it is an open-source project. It features clean urls and SEO from the start. Everything is designed in a clean and simple way. Magento also features: Unlimited flexibility, Completely Scalable Architecture, Professional and Community Support, and Smooth Integration with 3rd party apps.

Ydeveloper - the op had asked for open source solutions (albeit that I'll guess that they managed to select one when they asked this question 3 years ago). For the purposes of people who find this thread searching for solutions, Magneto is a popular system with an open source community edition.

However, e-Smart  eCommerce Suite is not open source so far as I can see. Just a product that your company sells. I fail to see the relevance in a topic about open source software. I also think it is decidedly odd to say "There is no doubt the Magento is best ecommerce solution today" - and then go on to suggest the product that a user can pay you for, which you have already said isn't as good as the zero cost Magento product. Really makes your product redundant, doesn't it?
