MySQL Error: Too Many Connections
« on: September 11, 2002, 04:05:00 AM »
I just started a posting site http://www.junglepost.com/ which relies heavily on MySQL connectivity.  On occasion I receive the error: "too many connections".

Has this happened to anybody else?

Problems like this can occur when people are using PHP's mysql_pconnect() instead of mysql_connect().  A persistant connection will stay open until MySQL times it out.  Also, mysql_close() will not terminate the connection.

I have been getting these errors as well with only 20 people posting online but probably not all pulling at exactly the same time.  I was told by our forum software people that 250 connections is default for a MySQL dbase.

Can I ask what is the actual limit set to?

There is a limit of 100 simultaneous connections per user. If you are near that limit, i suggest you drop the persistent connections.

Have in mind, 100 simultaneous connections is a a very high limit in a shared hosting environment.
