Browsing new sites via IP
« on: April 16, 2007, 06:40:30 PM »
Hi
Is it possible to browse sites on a  dedicated server by IP address while waiting for the domain DNS changes to filter through? i.e. something like http://mydedicatedserverurl/~sitename If so, what is the URL syntax?

cheers

Lucas

With a dedicated server, you should have a dedicated ip address. You should be able to use that to access your site until propagation is complete.

Hope this helps,

Hi Randy

Thanks for that - I know my server's IP, but I want to be able to browse particular domains on it before those domains have had their DNS records updated. So if I have a site xyz.co.nz on the server how can I browse it before xyz.co.nz's nameserver changes have propagated?

cheers

On my CentOS cPanel box it's http://hostname.domain.com/~cpanelusername or http://ipaddress/~cpanelusername

Your mileage may vary.
it is what it is

Also, if you use Plesk, there is the site preview option on the domain's panel that allows to browse the site prior to DNS propagation.
