Are the Dedicated Servers somehow managed ?
« on: November 14, 2006, 10:43:55 AM »
I appreciate the Dedicated Servers packages. However I need some basic level of managing:

Applying new patches and HotFixes for the OperationsSystem and the server software.
Managing default spam filters.
Setting up basic Firewall rules
Automatic backup of hard disc files and folders

Is this all included?

At the bottom of the packages table there is a row labelled "Managed Hosting $9.99 / month"
What does that mean ? Which services are included in this additional "Managed" add-on ?

What exactly means here SSH: Encyrption of ftp or eMail ?
« Reply #1 on: November 14, 2006, 10:47:56 AM »
As one feature of the Dedicated Servers is "SSH".

What is exactly meant with this?
Are the Ftp sessions encrypted with SSH (resp. scp) ?
Or is the eMail traffic encrypted or the web traffic ?

How fast is the connection speed from international locations?
« Reply #2 on: November 14, 2006, 10:53:11 AM »
If we take one of the Decdicated Server packages we will very often access the server
from international locations (Asia/Europe) through ftp.

How fast is the real (!! not only the official) connection speed for upload and download ?

We need a real download speed with at least 200 KBytes/sec
and an upload speed with a minimum of 150 KBytes/sec
Double rates would be more suitable

Are there any experiences from other users with the connection speed ?

Hello pstein, welcome to the forums! I went ahead and merged together your questions to make tracking things a little easier for you.  For the quickest route on getting your answers I would recommend going to talk to our server admins.  You can chat with server admins directly about our Dedicated Plans by going to http://www.dedicated@lunarpages.com/ or, if you wish you can contact them at dedicated@lunarpages.com.  Thanks!

I believe there is a "managed hosting" option you can buy as an add-on with the dedicated packages...

SSH is for connecting remotely to the server via a command line interface... it is more secure than telnet

Although it's HTTP based rather than FTP based, you can try: http://www.lunarpages.com/speedtest/ to get an idea of transfer speed between you and one of LP's server. Performance might vary slightly from server to server, but should give you a general idea...

The above information may or may not reflect current policy, opinions, or views since it was likely made almost 10 years ago.

Can you please explain what the "Managed" add-on is?

How is this (using the managed option) different than the management you get running under shared plans?

Hello Shadowhawk70,

If you buy a dedicated server and don't choose the management package, then we don't manage it.  You are essentially renting a server, some rack space, and some bandwidth from us.  We load the OS and control panel you choose and turn it over.  No monitoring, no patching, no automatic reboots.  It's unmanaged.

For $9.95 a month we will put your server into our server monitoring program, which means someone will be watching your server 24/7/365, and if load spikes or services go down or whatever, we'll take a look.  If it needs to be rebooted we will do so at no charge.  We will notify you of recommended software updates to your kernel, php, apache, or whatever, and will assist in the upgrades if needed.  We will install the APF firewall as well as RKHunter.  And of course we'll set up your remote backups if you need help with that.

You also ask how this is different than the level of service on our shared servers.

The main difference is that the shared server is ours and the managed server is yours (at least for the purposes of this discussion).

If we notice an issue on a shared server we're going to just fix it, because it's our server and we can do what we want with it.

If we notice an issue with your managed dedicated server, we will notify you and work with you to fix it, but we're not going to just go in and start making changes that might break your configuration without your permission.  (Unless it's a real emergency in which case we reserve the right to protect our network and systems.)

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, or swing by http://dedicated@lunarpages.com to speak with a sysadmin.

One more thing... with the semi-dedicated vs dedicated, what is the difference.

Also, if I want to have a few things installed on it like ffmpeg and the other tools in that group. Would you be able to do that or would I have to do that?

I am sorry, but what do you mean by semi-dedicated? Lunarpages offer shared, VPS and dedicated plans. VPS server is almost similar to the dedicated one excepting that VPSs share the same  physical server.

You get one free script setup per billing year with the managed addon. If the programs you need can be installed using yum, we can add them for free. If a custom compilation is required, it will cost $75 per hour for each setup request after the free script install included in the managed addon was used.

ffmpeg is not included in CentOS by default. You would use the free script setup that comes with the managed addon to get that installed on the server.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
