Googleoids - Search Scrabble
« on: August 23, 2006, 09:00:21 AM »
<site is gone, but kept interesting discussion -- Mod.>

I've been developing a Java game which crosses google image search with scrabble - its a great way to waste some time if you are bored.

The rules are simple:

1. Poke pictures to release letters.
2. Use letters to search for more pictures.

Points are awarded based on the number of search results returned and the number of letters used. If not enough letters are used or no search results returned, the game is over.

It's still in the alpha test stage but I'm already pretty pleased with the result.

I've been keeping this under my hat for a while now (this is my first online post about it) - the reason being I've been waiting for the "OK" from google.

Will google ever respond to my emails regarding using the name and search technology? who knows!? I'm tired of waiting and want to get some feed back. so...

Go play googleoids (and tell your friends)

http://www.googleoids.com

I recommend playing the standalone version as connections are made directly to google rather than via www.googleoids.com (acting as proxy) Tip to lunarpages - speed up your downstream is it capped at 5KB/s ?

Let me know what you think,

Mike.

I didn't see any pictures. Just a blank frame with a counter timing down.  When the counter reached zero a list of high scorers appeared.  Never saw any pictures or letters though.

I get pics, but they do sometimes take a little bit of time to load in. Since this pics are the result of a google images search, there are several places along the way where the slow down could be happening I would guess...

For those of you tired of waiting for the pictures to load try the standalone version:

http://www.googleoids.com/googleoids/Googleoids.jnlp
*** You will need Java Runtime Environment 1.4+ setup correctly (www.java.com)

The problem is the applet must pull the images through lunarpages' server which, for some reason, is very slow. - poke at Lunarpages.

The standalone version makes direct connections to images.google.com and on DSL takes a fraction of a second to get all images.

Enjoy.

what sort of server load is created by having all the images pulled from google to the LP server and then pushed out again? Is it possible in the web version to go straight to google and just grab the number of images directly from google rather than the images themselves? Just don't want to see you get in trouble for excessive resource usage on the shared plans... and really not sure if this is likely or not, but curious about it with all the images being pulled from google through LP...

Server load is tiny.

One connection is made to perform the search.
The text/html response is typically no more than 20KB

12 connections are made to get the images. (not all at once and the same connection will be used for HTTP1.1)
The image/jpeg responses are typically between 2KB and 6KB

On average its about 60KB for each level of the game.

Unfortunately Java applets can only make connections back to the server they are hosted on.  Which is why I had to set up a proxy at lunarpages (restricted to connecting images.google.com I might add) to get it to work as an applet.

The standalone version can make direct connections, however the user must "trust" my application by approving a certificate.

Hope this answers your questions.

Mike.

Could just script everything in Flash so that you would be able to pull images from other locations.

Just a thought.

This is quite cool :D.
It would be cool is it had a 5 second or so loading between each level
