ChessUp : A new site for creating chess diagrams
« on: May 04, 2006, 02:49:47 PM »
Hello all,

I'd like to invite you all to my new site ChessUp! http://chessup.net/

The primary feature of the site is the ability to create chess diagrams, and then save those diagrams as images, OR send links of the diagram to your friends (great for text-only situations).

There is also a blog and a section on the rules of chess.

I'd appreciate any feedback anyone can give me.  There is still work to be done, obviously.  The Help page isn't very helpful at the moment.  I'd be interested in hearing about any usability errors, design problems, browser incompatabilities, or any other comments (good or bad...I can take it)!

Thanks  8-)
Trent

I don't know if there are similar sites but I think it's a great idea. Seems very useful for chess afficianados.

It kinda looks like the  chess pieces on the banner are buttons of some sort - a little confusing. Would make for a nice button scheme if you chose to do so.

I think you would be much better served with more text on the page for search engines. Having the text contained in an image is confusing and a bit of a waste.

Once again, great idea for a site...and it works.

I enjoyed reading your tactics page.
I'm thinking of starting to play chess online and I haven't played for years, so this is a great resource.

I couldn't get your chess editor to work in firefox, works in IE.

Thanks for the suggestions.

- Yes, I am thinking of adding more text to the home page.  I want to keep it simple, but also be informative.  I guess the homepage could be a graphic.  My big problem is that the actual "Create Diagram" page has very little text on it.  I don't know how to add more.

- @human2.0: What part of it wasn't working in Firefox?  I work almost exclusively in Firefox, and I haven't noticed any problems.  Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks again everyone.

It wasn't working for me in FF so I refreshed the page and it worked. Then I closed the browser and came back in FF and it worked off the bat.  :?

Thanks for the additional info.  I've been able to reproduce the problem.  I'm not sure what is causing it (Firefox' JavaScript console doesn't show any errors).  It seems like if you refresh the page, eventually it will work.  Hmmm, something for me to look at...   :-?

I really like the site. It's useful, practical, and it has a nice layout. But like other people mentioned, the chess diagram page seems to only randomly work. Yesterday it worked fine for me on my first try. But today, when I had to refresh the page twice before I got it working. These sorts of bugs can be really frustrating for a developer, I hope you get it worked out.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments.  I think I've fixed the problem.  (Long story short: the X and Y coords of the images were being read and stored right when the page loaded, but the X and Y coords were "distorted" because the page wasn't done loading).

Could you guys bang on the site some more and see if the problem is gone?  I was able to consistently reproduce the error before applying the fix.  After I put up the fix, the error seems to be gone.

Thanks!  :D

I'm guessing it's supposed to allow you to place several of the same item after selecting it. If so, I found no problems in FF.

I'd like to see a similar page for diagramming football and basketball formations/plays.

Yeah, you can put the pieces anywhere you want.  I decided not to enforce any kind of rules.  For example, you can create a diagram showing the "8 Queens Problem":

the first time i visited it the board was displaced in the y dir up by about one place, on refresh it worked.
I have a feeling it might not work very well on dial up?
Perhaps you could hide board until it fully loads?
