New site design idea
« on: February 11, 2006, 04:33:03 AM »
I'm in the process of redesigning a site for someone, but I'm trying to convince them to give me the go-ahead to launch it!

Here's the new homepage (Note: some of the images, inc. the the main links, shouldn't look like that, but I'm still tweaking!)

I prefer the new design, mainly because it took me a while to do! Also, it's wider than the current design, and the layout is controlled by a stylesheet (no tables). Also, I do prefer the new logo!

I think it's time for a change of design, and I think the current site is slow and needs to progress: the current homepage.

What do people think? How could I vary things on the new design?

Many thanks.

Like your new homepage better... think that the design is pretty comparable... both look like professional front pages...

But the biggest selling point of your new site is the speed that it upload in...  Their current site is really poor when it comes to speed.

I took a look at the source code of the current homepage, and it might have something to do with the nested tables in the html.  Don't know, but the graphics look like they have been reasonable optimized (other than the .5 meg top graphic).

At very worst, you could probably redesign their same homepage and achieve the speed they lack.

Like your new design, certainly much faster which equals more clients and use.  Incidentally, the rollover navigation breaks in your demo.

Good luck with your sale...

I kinda like the old ones smoothness, such as rounded corners etc. I also like the top of the old one. Instead of a squared look, its indented downward.

However the new one is much more pleasing on the eyes. The colors are a nice touch. Old site matched the flag color at the cost of the visitors eyes being doused in red w/ white text.

Like Starke stated, they both are comparable and look professional.  :thumb:

Nice job.

I like the new site much better.  Didn't realize that the british spelled "specialise" with an "s" instead of a "z" !!!! Leanr something new everyday. What about "realize" ?? lol , got me wondering now !!! I hope you get the go ahead to launch the new version ! Good work, thanks for sharing !

Thanks for the replies and the compliments - just need to convince my client that the new design should still be considered! Perhaps I'll have to change the colour scheme slightly..

I'm also unsure about the new header...

And yes, RAT, us Brit's do spell 'realise' with an's'!  :)

Just my 2 cents.  The old site looks like a more "cohesive" design to me.  The banner pic on the new site seems to have little relation (colorwise) to the rest of the page. I agree that the red with white text on the old site is a little hard to read.  I think you are headed in the right direction but need some color tweaking for cohesiveness of design.

Thanks Webweaver, I'm not sure about the new banner/header, but the previous one I had was quite a large image, and I couldn't optimise it enough.

Well it looks as if the old site will remain, for now! Tuh...

I think I worded that awkwardly. I like your new banner, but all of the green below it just doesn't quite jive with the banner to me. Other than that minor color quarrel, I think the page looks good. :thumb:

I like some elements from each.

I think if you rounded the corners, like the old site, it would be an improvement.

The biggest thing that's bothering me with the new one is the unevenness.  The banner cuts off 3/4 of the way across the page, with just the plank "RW" on the right with no border.  It wouldn't be so bad if the RW had a box around it to give it some weight, as it is, it's essentially a blank space.  It's really out of balance.  And the bottom of the sectinos don't line up.

If you get everyting to line up, soften the edges with the rounded boxes, and add a little bit of color variation, you've got something.

Here's the original header: http://www.redtelephonebox.com/NEW_index02.php

As for the sections not lining up - that's why I added the darker background for the 3 main sections (or columns) as the sections inside them will always be different lengths and it's hard to keep them the same length, and it adds some variation.

I will fiddle about with the colours a bit...

'm assuming that you represent a web design business (MTSATURN Design) and if thats the case, I'm a little worried about your motivation for changing the site (based on your comments in the first post).

Since the site is specifically about British memorabilia, the incorporation of the Union Jack and a red/white/blue colour scheme ensures that the subject matter is tied to the appearance. In other words the site has a strong brand.

This is the web site of a business, and just changing it to look nice isn't good enough. Its got to look good and be an accurate relection of the business, and there has to be a tangible business benefit for rebranding.

Based on those criteria, i think it should definately stay as it is.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear, but if you are making a living from this kind of work you really should know better.

Yes, I know what you mean, but me and my client have a good relationship regarding the site, and whenever one of us have an idea for the site, we suggest it, and a redesign was mentioned a while ago, but I just don't think he's quite ready yet.

Also, I thought the new site might be an improvement, quite important, seeing as its got my name on it! I just thought I could something better.
