Title: Python???
Post by: ttownfire on September 20, 2007, 02:17:05 PM
Python is just as hot as Ruby. Why doesn't Python have a dedicated room?

Following up on this post from 2 years ago. Any interest from others regarding a Python specific forum room?

I would suggest sending your suggestions over to  We take all suggestions into consideration.  :thumb:

Mitch: Thank you for the suggestion. Here is what I sent Regards, Malcolm

Dear LunarPages,

I'm a 5 year+ enthusiastic customer of LunarPages.

One area where LunarPages appears to be trailing is in its support for Python. Here are some easy ways to improve this situation and take advantage of one of the fastest growing languages[1] in the industry.

1. Add a Python specific forum room so that Python questions don't get lost amidst the PHP/Perl conversations.

2. Update your versions of Python from 2.4.3 (2+ years old) to the industry standard 2.5.4. (2.6.x and 3.x are not ready for production use yet). There are pre-built binary installs available at and/or full source if you would like to compile your own.

3. Add support for mod_python and/or Fast CGI for Python. (I recognize this may be a little more involved).

Note: Enhancing your support for Python does not mean you have to add support for Django which I agree does not belong in a shared hosting environment. There are many quality Python web framework alternatives to Django that your customer can use.

If there's anything I can do to help you move forward with any of these suggestions, please let me know.

[1] Python was programming language of the year in 2007 and is one of the fast growing languages

Per Mitch's comment above, I encourage anyone reading this thread to send a note to requesting more support for Python. By more support, I mean newer releases of Python 2.5.4 (and upcoming maintenance releases of 2.6 and 3.0), support for mod_python and/or Python Fast CGI support, and finally a dedicated Python specific forum. LunarPages offers a great hosting experience in general (I'm very pleased), but has dropped the ball when it comes to quality Python 'support'.

I definitely agree.

I attempted to get working without any luck yesterday. It would be great to see how others have been able to use Python. Also, like you said, we really need a python upgrade...

Well, its almost 18 months later and guess what ... LunarPages is still running the same lame, out dated versions of Python they have been for years.

I'm frustrated and disappointed that a world-class hosting firm like LunarPages can't get their act together in this area.  :(
