Title: Only enough css to be dangerous
Post by: ronmsf2 on November 27, 2004, 01:46:12 PM
Okay... I wanted my site layout to be css based, and I found a great template, but I know only enough css to be dangerous, so although I've made changes that work in Firefox, I've pretty much broken the layout in other broswers.

I'm actually trying to change to a new layout, and would appreciate comments either on what you think of the old layout versus the new layout, or any suggestions you have in fixing the problems I've introduced in modifying the css.

This is the layout I'm working on:  http://rml3.com/a10p/gargoyles_test.html

Thanks,
Ron

I like it. I couldnít tell much of a difference between fire fox and IE6 besides the content box that holds "Home" "About Me" and "Feedback" at the top is a little short in IE6. I'm being kicked off so I canít look at much, but it could be how IE interprets the content box model wrong. There is a page that explains it all, but I couldnít find it in my bookmarks so maybe somebody could post it.

It seems a lot of your links seem to open new windows, is that on purpose? I don't like it much.

I like the layout and how you did the boxes on the left. :thumb:

I would agree with deadly_risk regarding the links opening in new windows. I can see it being handy to open some links in new windows but not every single link. I like to open a lot of links in new tabs when browsing, but not all of them. So to have to close every single link I visit if I don't open it in a new tab is a bit much. :-|

But otherwise you did a really good job. :)

Yeah, on the test page everything opens a new window.  I did that so I could easily open and compare different layouts.  Normally it would not work like that.   Generally I set it up so that only links outside of my own site would open a new window.

Thanks for the feedback and comments.  The IE problem should be relatively easy to fix.  The problem with Opera though.. I don't know.  That will take a bit more digging.

Thanks again,
Ron

Thanks Thu, but remember, it is not really my work.  All I've done is made some minor changes to one of the Ruthsarian layouts... and in the process introduced some bugs!  But thank you for the compliment.

Regarding the links, so my note to deadly_risk.

I'm using that same exact Gargoyles layout from Ruthsarian for a website that I'm working on.  Unfortunately, I don't have the website uploaded anywhere that you can take a look at it, but I will do so as soon as possible. I'll have it available for everybody to see when we launch the site in another few weeks (hosted at LP, of course).

I've had the same problem with other css templates:  Some of them work in FF/Mz, but not IE, and vice versa.   In your case, the size of your logo at the top left hand side may be the problem.  That's just a guess, though.  It's really not very noticeable.

There's a book out called "Teach Yourself CSS in 24 Hours", by Kynn Bartlett.  I highly recommend this book if you're just getting started out in CSS.  And especially if you're adapting other style sheets.  You'll find that you're able to have a lot more control over what you're able to do with the layout.

BTW, I like your color scheme and what you're doing with the layout.  Keep working with it, don't be afraid to experiment and find out what does and doesn't work.

Hey that's great.  I'm definitely open to any tips you discover along the way, and am interested in checking out your site.  I like the Ruthsarian layouts.  Really nice guy too.  I probably would have given up on a css layout if I hadn't found his site.

Thanks for the book recommendation.  I will check it out.  I think the jagged right edge and the difference in hnav rendering between FF and IE can be pretty easily fixed.  I just need to spend some time with it.  The problem with Opera now looks like a quirk in Dreamweaver... if I preview the page with Opera through Dreamweaver, the layout is broken, but if I view the page on the LP server with Opera it looks fine.  Finally, the footer... I'm not sure there is much I can do about that.  I can apply 'clear both' to the footer div to pull that down, but that doesn't pull the content area down too, and I'm not sure that is possible since the left hand nav divs come after the content div.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Its a good book, One of the few that gives readable reports on what works in what browsers and how to fix it.

Hi Ron,

I wanted to thank you for pointing out the CSS template.  I liked it so much I'm experimenting with it for my movies site I've been in the planning stages on for ages lol:

http://screeningblock.com/

This is only a day's worth of working on the idea for it so really nothing beyond changing colors and content (also, not sure if we need to retain the copyright he posted on it or not so will have to re-read his information on these templates).

Thanks again, and your site looks really good with what you've done on the template (I use Firefox so yours looks great on it anyway).  :thumb:

Hi Danielle,

I'm glad you liked the template.  As I said, I think the guy has put together some really nice templates, and I think it's great that he makes them freely available.  It really helped me out, so I'm more than happy to recommend his stuff to others.  It's also nice to know a few people using the layout as we may be able to help each other out.

Your movie review site looks great.  Thanks for sharing it.  I look forward to seeing more as you develop it, (and look forward to reading some of your reviews...)

Scroll down past the first static image.  There are two animated graphics, one with a "transparent" background, and one with a black background and simulated starscape.  Which option do you prefer under the following categories, (or any comments are appreciated; these are just some things to consider):

1.  artistically
2.  for use in a technical document
3.  overall in the page it is in

Thanks,

I like the black background for everything, but the text is a little harder to read.

Post by: TranzNDance on December 14, 2004, 10:31:47 PM
The black background gives the spheres better context than the transparent one. :) It looks like a planet in #2. #1 could be an atom with a very slow electron. :D

I'd go with #2 because it makes puts everything into a defined space rather than floating on and blending into the rest of the page... plus it has stars :)

That was one of my biggest concerns.  Not sure how to fix that, but I will play with it and see what I can do.

LOL... okay, I get the message  :thumb:

I didn't like the way the image looked like it was just thrown into the page when it had the black background, so I was tending toward the first one, but it seems unanimous that others prefer the second option, so I will work with the second one, and try adding a frame around it so hopefully it won't look so much like it was just thrown onto the page.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!   :thumb:

I did want to impart my own opinion about the issue (in case it might be helpful in any way).

I think the image with the white background that you had there previously below the images you asked about was actually much easier to see.  You could make the planet another color and the stars & text black, then use white to see how that would look.  If you compare the one with the white background (I know it is an entirely different image and no longer there now :)), it was much much easier to read the text and see it.

Thanks!  Unfortunately I was a little pressed for time.  The darn thing was due this evening, so I was working in a frenzy trying to get it finished.  I was slapping things together as fast as I could... which wasn't easy with the Flash since I had never used it before.  The written material is pretty weak, but at least it came together in something that "looks" like a complete project, and for never having used Flash before, I'm pretty happy with the animations.  I like your ideas though, and if I had more time, I would have played around with them.  Perhaps in a future update.

Thanks for the feedback...

I have heard of it, but I didn't know it would go over so well... you really like it huh?  Maybe I will have to give that a second thought.  Believe it or not, I do try to find things that will surprise my wife and that she will really enjoy... But I have tried to show her things through a telescope... I'm all excited like a little kid, but when she looks through the telescope she just says "is that it?"  Not intended to reflect badly on her though, because that is a common reaction... most people expect to see something like they see in a magazine, but it's just not like that...  Anyway, I will look into it though.  She might be tickled at the idea of having a star named afer her.  Do you know where your star is?

Anyway, here's my post where I gave my reaction when I first received it:

http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=77274#77274

I'm sure that would be the same reaction your wife would have. It's not even the star itself, but the specialness of the act. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that a star is named after me, but it's more than just that. LOL, okay, okay, I know ... us silly women, but if it weren't for those romantic/precious little things you guys do that make us appreciate and love you men, then you'd be in the dog house most of the time!!  :)

P.S. Looks like they have a holiday special going on now. He paid over $100 for his, so you might want to take advantage of the special (although, they may have reduced the price due to competition, as I know there are others doing the same)

Anyway, if I had a forum on my site, it would be for my customers and I sure as heck couldn't be whippin' them to a pulp, now could I?!! LOL  :)

Well, there might be a certain segment of customers that would like that...

Unfortunately, not too much action on your poor forum, LOL. Looks like if it weren't for confused , you'd be darn right lonely,

LOL... Yeah, it didn't really take off, and I haven't spent any time recently promoting my forums...   confused sure was a good sport about it though... I gotta hand it to him, he really tried to hang in there and help me get it started.   I've been considering going to a BLOG instead... the forum was kind of a dud!

LOL, well as you noticed Ron, I have registered on your site, and am right there now posting things. Unfortunately, I've been currently stuck there for quite a while now, cuz I'm writing a novel on one of those dang threads confused created, LOL!!!!  :)

I ain't gonna reply to ALL of them, cuz I will go crazy otherwise, but I'm replying to a few that I can think up good posts for, lol  :)

You're doing that just to make me work huh?  I was getting lazy about it, (kind of obvious huh?)...

Well, in all seriousness, thanks for stopping by and posting... I wouldn't expect much company if I were you... even confused finally jumped ship... but I'll stick around as long as you do...

LOL, well I was trying to be supportive cuz I felt sorry for ya (and I also felt sorry for confused cuz he was looking pretty pathetic there, continuing to post knowing that the only responses would be coming from you, LOL  :poke: )

But anyway, maybe it's best you do your "blog" thingy, cuz if now it's gonna be only you and me, that's even worse, cuz now I'm the one who's gonna look pathetic   :whip:

LOL, I will stop in tomorrow to read more of the posts you and confused have done though. Some of it was quite interesting/amusing! May even post some responses myself, just for the heck of it  :D
