Neglect....nah.

She wasnt on for like 5 hours last night. Her and a friend when to the others old school for some little concert thing...not sure.

The one I was gonna get, yes a little outrageous is the nikon d70 but I talked to somebody and they said another camera I checked out was better and that is the Canon Rebel....so I will probably end up getting that one. For a lense and the body its gonna cost just under a grand. My parents said that if I raise half we can talk for a christmas gift....so far I have about 270 so I am not doing soo bad...

I have a template for a photo site I want to make so I can keep adding photos I take to it, but before I get anywhere with the content I want to make sure that the template is in complete order and everything is good so I don't have to go back later and change it.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!  :)

Do you really want to have your links open in the original window rather than opening a new one?
I popped over to check out one of your links.. had a wander around..... closed the wondow and..... your site window was closed

I prefer everything to open in one window, so I can choose what I want to open in a new tab and look at, and what not to. If you choose to open a new window with your links maybe a little note that says "All links open in new widow" or something.

LOL, lest we not forget this poll  :poke: :

But to please geeks like deadly_risk  :D  , a note would be okay, but to be honest, those who realize how/know/or remember to open links in a new tab/window are a minority, so if confused's site is targeting mostly to non-Geeks, then best he have the links that take the viewer off-site open in a new window.

Even Pete, who we all would consider either a Geek or semi-Geek at least :o , got zapped-out cuz he didn't open the link in a new window and he "exited" rather than used the BACK button. This will most undoubtably happen to majority of people who peruse confused's site  :whip: <-- okay, just had to put that in, cuz I felt like it

Okay.....its as close to done as I can make it. There will always be something I want different on it but thats okay.

http://www.lonephoto.com

If you view it through FF there IS a problem. I don't know how to fix it so if you do know how please post here. In the lower little table, it says 2005 Lone Photo. That shows up in IE but in FF it doesnt. I think it has something to do with the Template I am using and how I made it an uneditable region. Does anybody know why I can't see this in FF but I can in IE?

One last thing, it looks better in IE because the border around the main thing is like the opposite in firefox.

Reviews? Opinions? Comments? Suggestions? I really want to make this site the best it can be so I want you guys to tear it apart!

Thanks a ton!

Hi Confused,

I like it. Just a few changes to suggest - don't know if it is possible though.

Could your pictures open in your template rather than a new window? You might need some forward backward buttons to help move from one pic to another, but I think they would look better if displayed in your template.

AT the top of your page, you have that smal LP avatar/banner whatever - it appears not to be part of your template and, IMO, is confusing. I would lost it. Although I do like the spacing it gives to the rest of your page.

As for your copyright question...this is the code for that line

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top" bgcolor="cccccc" class="style1">&copy; 2005 Lone Photo</td>

I don't know what the "&copy;" is for in that line, but I think if you lose that it might fix your problem? Worth a try.

Other than that - looks nice. You are doing good!
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: leighsww on April 16, 2005, 03:56:04 PM
Aha, I finally spotted the problem, confused!

You need to add the # in front of the color in this tag:

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top" bgcolor="cccccc" class="style1">&copy; 2005 Lone Photo</td>

If you add the # to make that:

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top" bgcolor="#cccccc" class="style1">&copy; 2005 Lone Photo</td>

It will now show the copyright line in FF!  :thumb:

Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 05:16:38 PM
Okay thanks for the Leigh and thanks for trying fret! lol

The little logo thing (that is what I was trying to go for......is it because of the colors or what about it doesn't match?

You think it would look nicer to have forward and back buttons? I was just thinking this was the better way to go because loading times are something I want to keep at a minimium and that would increase it a lot. Do you think it would really make THAT much of a difference? It would take quite a while to change it to this but if you think that it would be better that way it can be done.

Thanks for the feedback...DW is being stupid and not updating my pages so I guess its time to do it the hard way.  :?
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 05:19:23 PM
AHHH!! DW did update the templates...this is so bizzare. Check the code in IE and then check the code in FF.

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top" bgcolor="#cccccc" class="style1">&copy; 2005 Lone Photo</td> That is IE!

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top" bgcolor="cccccc" class="style1">&copy; 2005 Lone Photo</td> That is in FF!

Can anybody explain this? Is my computer being stupid or......ahh I don't get it. Thanks!

I would agree with Fret to put the photos in the template and enable navigation as she suggested. :)
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 05:48:44 PM

You did say to tear it apart...

Maybe there is a php script that would make that part easier and make an iframe in your template for the script to run in. Just a thought and trying to make your life easier after criticizing what you all ready had done!
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 07:01:58 PM
I kind of want all my site to be done by me and not a script (except for the contact page)....if I were to do the other way I would make it before I found a script I wanted.

But really, thanks for the comments. One last thing, What did not make sense about the logo in the upper right? The colors? or it just seems outta place? Any ideas on what I should do about it because I do want something there.
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: fretnmore on April 16, 2005, 07:40:22 PM
OUt of place - you all ready have your banner/heading...I didn't understand what the purpose was for having that there. It seemed like it was extra and unneccessary..JMO

If you like it, leave it there....I don't think that is a big deal one way or the other.

I do like the spacing that having it there does for the main part of your site. I dislike sites that go all the way to the left without any spacing there. Probably why I prefer to have it centered rather than to the left. Just my preference though. Ask others whether having it centered or to the left is better for them.
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 08:29:40 PM
So do you think it would look good centered and just take that out altogether? Actually....well anybody else post if they would like it centered...if not I like it how it is.
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: fretnmore on April 16, 2005, 08:36:39 PM
I would center it - again, just my opinion. If you prefer it to the left and with the extra logo, then leave it just the way it is. After all, it is your website and not mine.

One thing I really, really like is your slogan "Frozen in the Frames of Life" - That is so nice.
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 16, 2005, 08:38:32 PM
I can't take credit for all of that. I can take about 1/3 of the credit. The other two thirds belong to leigh and pete. pete for the Frozen part. Leigh for the combination of my idea of the frames of life and petes Frozen.

But thanks!

Confused, I think it looks great.  You're combining two of your passions:  Website creation and photography.  I think your landscape pics especially look nice.  You only had a few validation issues on the index page, and that was for some javascript and things like alt attribute not defined.  No biggie.  I know that any time I include somebody else's javascript, I'm not going to get that page to validate, as hard as I try.

I like your header and menu on that first page.  However, since it's a photography site, how about including some digital "snippets" of a few of your best photos on there as well?  The page as a whole looks a little unfinished without some more graphic content.  Or, how about some photos of you, or the equipment you're using?  Just a thought.

All in all, a nice site.  Drop me a line sometime when you see me on messenger so we can talk about software some more!

Post by: GarveysIT on April 19, 2005, 09:22:38 AM
i like the site, it's really good, i've got a couple of ideas though (whether you want em or not :o )

center the site, but leave the little image in the top right set to the top right, if you dont want to make your photos open in a template, how about making them open in a smaller popup wiuth a 'close' button like Pete has done here:

http://x-visions.co.uk/3d.htm

oh yeah: your contact pages - one has words in bold and the other 2 dont.
Title: Lone Photo
Post by: confused on April 19, 2005, 05:54:42 PM
Ahhh....thanks for pointhing that out garvey! Nice catch.

Eobeav...nice suggestion for the home page..I knew it was lacking something but I wasn't sure. Thanks, I will try to get some like 3 photos on the main page =). I might even put one up of me *shudders* (people usually don't get pictures of me lol.

Since everybody is suggesting that the photos open in something else I guess if I have time this weekend I will have them open in like a black page with a close button (even if I do have to create a seperate page for each photo) I think right?

BTW: Does DW have a close button? Or can somebody provide me with some code or whatnot? Not quite sure how to do that.

Thanks all again!  :)

I think the header may look better without the extra logo on the left and centered.  Another alternative would be to leave the logo and 'meld' the logo design on the left with the header. So make the logo on the left the same height and design/color scheme as your header or vice versa.  This would make the top look more unified and make your design consistent.

Other critiques:

1. Add a border around your drop menus.  This will help distinguish the drop downs from the background colors.
2. Create a "Links" page to launch your links from. Launching a new site from a drop down menu is a bit of a surprise for your visitors.
3. A helpful tool to use for any site is the W3C validator at http://validator.w3.org/ but you didn't have many validation issues.

The menu design looks great. I do like your header design and the left logo design, just not with the separate designs.

Good Work!
