Title: nothing special, just wondering
Post by: mark363 on July 23, 2004, 05:17:04 PM
http://crosscreekva.com/chess

I made that for a friend at the high school I'm going to next year. Once the chess league starts, he'll put it on a new LunarPages account (so it doesn't use mine ;)). I got the template from OSWD (open-source web design, http://oswd.com) because I'm having trouble in the creativity department but modified it a bit (link colors, added onmouseover/out to navigation, added style to forms). What do you think of this site?

Looks GREAT, mussavcom!  :thumb:

Maybe later add an image of a chess piece(s) somewhere on there.  Possibly half-toned in the background of the upper title or such :P

Well, you were asking what we thought of the site, and I KNOW you mentioned it was a template and I thought that template looked great, silly.

Then I added to my post, to possibly add an image later. Sheesh, you silly boy! If you don't want comments, don't ask! Make me waste my breath, why don't you!  :whip:

I'll try, but then I'd have to draw a chess piece, and my imaging skillz suck too  :)  :(  :?  8-)  :whip:  :|  :-?  (if only there was 1 icon that mixed those 7)

Do you mean "crusher"?  Well, you sure are!  But, that's okay.  I still think that template looks great for your chess theme and I'll still give you kudos for picking that particular template, so there  :poke:

I'm sure you can find royalty free images of chess pieces somewhere off the Internet.

That's cheating.
Title: nothing special, just wondering
Post by: leighsww on July 23, 2004, 07:28:43 PM
Why is that cheating?  That's what royalty free images are for, silly!  Especially if you want to use it for something like that website.  But, that's up to you.  If you want to create a chess piece and make it artsy and your own, the more power to you and I say GREAT!

But if you're complaining/whining about not being able to do it (saying that your imaging skills suck), etc. then my solution to you is ... just use a royalty free one.

Either, do your best to create one, or use a premade one and do your best to make it look good on the site.

You're gonna need to become a more positive thinker, mussavcom!  :D

mussavcom,

I have a picture of an entire chess set inside of a bottle. The bottle is about 4" high about 2" around with about a 1/2" opening in it. You can see it here

http://saw-online.com/Gallery/Picnic/2003%20Illinois/120F.jpg

And, no, I don't know how he got all of that inside that bottle. I don't even know how he cut anything that small! The chess pieces were hand made!

um... i found a pic, now how do i make it all transparent? I only have Fireworks (mx 04).

Post by: leighsww on July 23, 2004, 08:25:59 PM
I'm afraid I don't do much in Fireworks, so that's gonna have to be one for Miraenda to help you with, mussavcom. Sorry.

Show me the image, however, so I can see what can be done with it.

Is it a gif or png file? Only those support transparency.

In FW, go to the Help menu and select Using Fireworks. Do a search for "Making areas transparent"

Also, when I said "half-toned" that's not the same as the "transparency" that you are thinking about (the kind done to gif and png so that the background is clear).  It's a "layer transparency" that I am referring to.  It will lighten the entire image so that it appears like a watermark.

Again, let me see the image so I can give you my feedback on what may look best.  :D

Yeha, I don't want it transparent; I want it like... half-invisible.  :?

I did want to note that, if you have a camera, you can always take a picture of a chess piece or pieces (this way you don't run into copyright issues).  In fact, anything you need on a site for a drawing, you could instead go take a picture of that same type of item, then change it in Fireworks and incorporate it into the site.

I thought about that, but:
1. It was late last night, so I couldn't do it immediately, so I gave u.  :)
2. My chess pieces are boring.

heh. I'll see what I can do today though, now that my parents won't kill me for not being asleep

Do you have a cable to connect from the computer to the camera? Or maybe a cardreader that could read the storage card that the camera uses? Have you downloaded pictures before from the camera?

Yeah, sorry, I should've mentioned. It's nothing you guys can help me with, basically the computer we used to use to download pics is shot, and the cable doesn't connect to this computer.

this way you don't run into copyright issues

Thus, to avoid any copyright issues, you look for "royalty free" clipart/images (that's why I specifically mentioned "royalty free" in my earlier posts) because those are permissioned by the owner/artist to be useable without any copyright issues (as long as you don't resell the image. They are solely used for graphic design purposes.  Each royalty free site will state their terms of use).

But, taking photos is a very good idea if you can't find "royalty free" images of your subject (although there are tons of royalty free stuff out there) or for just creating your own image cuz you want to.

I create my own artwork so I can't tell you exactly where is best sites found for royalty free stuff, but type "royalty free" in Google and you should find a bunch.

The chess piece pic you posted mussavcom looks good.  Was that a royalty free image?  Make sure before you use it.  If it is, then I'll give you some ideas how to incorporate it with your site.

wha?  i don't think i've actually seen an interesting chess piece..

another way around the copyright issue, one that i've found most useful myself, is a) completely ignore it and hope you never get caught, and b) own nothing in your name, spend any money you have ASAP and partake in poor bodily hygiene so they won't even want the shirt off your back...

i'm  a bit of a business guru as you can tell.... :o

Well, the images I've seen have coolish see-through glass ones that are...cool, and specifically made to sell the image, but I'm not about to go buy some images of chess pieces here.

Hey leigh, I knew you noted royalty free, but for a lot of people, it is more fulfilling to take a crummy pic of their own stuff and put it online than take something freely provided online.  Call me silly, but if I put flowers other people took on my site and didn't use my own, I wouldn't enjoy what I created as much.  It might be more of a stretch doing it for a chess site, but that is still a legitimate idea to take a picture instead of grabbing someone else's, free though they may be, images  :poke:

Also, I think the site looks good, mussaVcom

No, you're not silly ... I haven't disagreed with you at all about taking own pics. That I totally agree with and understand what you're saying, Miraenda.  I do all my own graphics, as well, but not so much cuz it's more fulfilling for me, it's what I do, I'm an artist, LOL :D

But, I feel that for someone who isn't artistically inclined or doesn't have a camera, or for that matter just won't get around to doing it if they have to do it themselves, then royalty free images are a good way to go :D

In fact, many graphic designers use royalty free (or paid-for) images for their ads, brochures, etc. because sometimes it's just easier and faster to use something already done - gets the job finished in a timely and less expensive manner.

Also, if mussavcom didn't so happen have chess pieces lying around (I don't, so I would have probably used royalty free art for that, cuz it's faster, easier, less expensive than having to create my own - especially for a website like that where "custom" images are not that important), then he'd either have to go out and buy some, or ask a friend, etc. then he may never get around to doing it.

That's also why many people use premade templates for their websites instead of creating their own (or use a software like Dreamweave or  FrontPage instead of hand-coding), cuz their goal and fulfillment is not to have to create a custom site from scratch, but to just get one up, finished fast and looking good.

So, I don't feel that we are disagreeing with each other here, we just have suggestions for people who can utilize any/all of those methods

OKAY! sheesh you two.. you're like my sisters  :|  heh

Well, I took some of my own pictures, some of them are cool, some suck. There are 10 of them, and I use sessions so they randomly display on a page and you don't see the same image twice until you've seen all 10. Cool, eh? (These are the pics below the News section.)

I also have a royalty-free one that i used (see above)

You already knew that silly!  Remember the "star" hubby got me?!  That was my birthday present and you knew when that was.  Okay, since you're aging so quickly, you must be getting forgetful, as well!  :poke:

Well as you so nicely pointed out I have yet another birthday coming up in little over a week.  So I am aging very quickly...  I wonder if anyone will name a star after me?
Title: nothing special, just wondering

Hmmm, maybe not a star, but how about an asteroid? That may seem a bit more fitting, don't you think?  :D

Awwww, don't say that, skeetley, you deserve better than a black hole (maybe a black eye, but never a black hole). An asteroid or comet would suit you well.  They've got spunk and attitude!  :D
