Title: Fireworks Blowout! - See Exciting Details Inside (no poll)
Post by: Danielle on December 29, 2003, 05:30:17 AM
Hi,

I don't like to brag, but this is my exciting new idea.  I am going to post a Fireworks picture (Fireworks is that way cooler Image editing program made by Macromedia) and let people make changes to it.  Since I try to be truly innovative and original when I do stuff, you should really enjoy this Blowout (sale items not included):

Original
(http://www.skewed3.com/Ed-in-Wonderland.jpg)

See the Lion
(http://www.skewed3.com/Ed-in-Wonderland-Sealion.jpg)

Mushrooming in Wonderland
(http://www.skewed3.com/Ed-in-Wonderland-Mushroom.jpg)

So, if you don't participate, that's okay. Feel free to comment anyway.  I'll probably keep posting in here with extra images, so check back frequently.  If anyone does come up with something really nice, I might even put it on my new, exciting, soon to be released site Skewed3.com (http://www.skewed3.com)

Also, thanks Ed for the pic.  You didn't know I was going to use it, but believe me, it is for a good cause.

Important Note: Please note that if you don't like the picture, you can even post a different one and make changes.  Since I think confusion is healthy and not following the rules is admirable, feel free to make stuff up as you go along, too.

Have a Funny Day

I hope your screen name doesn't actually mean what it says, otherwise I'd be really worried for Ed.  I'm going to be on the edge of my seat watching the next episode of National Geographic Explorer.

By the way, cool avatar.  Every time I look at it, sure gets my attention fixated on it and tends to put me in a hypnotic, very relaxed trance-like state.

Oh, I can just blame this unknown force on my taking moderator pics and turning them into flash or a photoshop challenge (um, I mean fireworks blowout).  I can't be held responsible myself. I like that one.  :D

psykik, you scoundrel, forcing me to do these things by hypnotism.  Here I was thinking of awarding you this month's best Fireworks pic and placing the pic on my site...I bet you were subliminally, unconsciously transmitting that idea as well through your avatar.  Heck, your avatar is probably even responsible for me posting so frequently, too.  :(

Here's my feeble beginner attempt. It's amazing the things you can(NOT) do with Paint. Sadly, that's the only image editing program I can afford, being a kid.

You did a good job mussavcom. I think it is funny (and, oh so true!).  :)

As for the image editing program, you can download the Macromedia Fireworks program for 30 days to try it out for free, then get really attached to it, and not be able to use it any more...Also, since you are a student, your parents could purchase the Educational version of Fireworks for $99, that is the student discount price.  Just visit www.macromedia.com to see.  That isn't too expensive in my opinion, but your parent might think it is.

Also, check out Ebay, because you can get older versions of software for a really good price.  Then you can always upgrade to a newer version in the future.

Well, it is pretty old, so I don't know. After that one comes Fireworks 4, Fireworks MX, then Fireworks MX 2004.  I would try to get at least Fireworks 4, if you can find one that cheap.  If not, then I guess anything is better than Paint.  :) (actually, I might even sell my MX copy to you if you'd like for a cheaper price, as in free, if you provide shipping and handling)

Note: I have both MX and MX 2004, so this is why I am willing to part with one.  I am not going to give poor mussavcom a pirated copy.

Wow, that's a good deal.  That version will be enough for you to start out with.

If you're not going to do the "Buy it now" and instead will be bidding on it, I recommend that you go to:

www.esnipe.com

read about it and if it will be useful to you, sign up and use that to get the best advantage on bidding.

Posted my above before seeing Miraenda's.

Miraenda - for that price, my opinion is that it can do what he needs.  Since he was getting away with Paint, then this will certainly be a huge upgrade already to his photo rendering/editing needs.

If there isn't a newer version for a good price right now on Ebay, then he can always upgrade when he feels it is necessary.  Otherwise, no sense spending too much money for him right now.

However, if you're going to sell him your version, then he probably will get the best deal from you (since FREE is always the best deal out there).  :)

so is it worth getting Fireworks 3 for $30?

P.S. leigh-- My neighbor bought used cameras, took them apart, and sold the parts on eBay. Eventually he quit his job and made this one a full time job (usedcamerabuyer.com) and seems to be making enough money working from home (lucky butt). Anyway, before he did all this he gave me some money to design a simple template for his auctions since he was doing them in plain text, which isn't very effective. Anyway anyway, he told me of some of the tricks he used, I got interested in eBay, and now I know a whole lot about it. To end this rambling post... I've gotten pretty good at sniping manually.

Well, I actually take a different view. Why not learn the newest technology if you can? I have 2 copies of Fireworks, and am more than willing to sell mine for the price of shipping and handling.  I think I can send the copy postage paid on delivery or something like that, although I've never done that before.

There is a price to this, though, you have to participate in my Fireworks Blowouts (or Mike's Photoshop Challenges, if he ever has any more of them).

Also, to me, it is more important you get a good copy and learn about it now so that someday you know a lot about the program and this will help you out.  You learn pretty fast, and I think it will be good experience for you.

If you do decide you would like the copy, simply PM me, and we can discuss it.

Addendum: Please note that I only have the one extra copy, so I will  not be able to start supplying people on the forum with free copies of software.  Just in case anyone got the idea that this might be the case.  :(

Also, the only reason I decided to offer my copy is b/c I just hate the thought of anyone buying an old copy (Fireworks 3 is so old) of a program.  The program has changed so much since Fireworks 3, and I'm not even sure Fireworks 3 will run properly on Windows XP. I guess I am just not economically-minded (likely why I don't ever have much money saved), but I would rather spend more money and get the best than something out of date.

Also, what is sniping? I've never done anything on eBay (I don't need another addictive activity in my life), so I'm not familiar with the term.

It's when you bid for the first time on an auction at the last minute. This is good because you don't raise the price bidding back and forth between 2 or more people days before the auction ends... instead, take them by surprise and win the auction at a cheaper price. Programs like esnipe will connect to your account and bid at the last second on the auctions you specify. Very helpful for those who don't have enough free time (or if the auction ends around 3 AM your time).

That's definitely a good view.  I agree with you, but if it suits the person's needs and is what the person can afford.  I always look at the situation at hand, and the pros and cons of it.

I've spent thousands of dollars on software in the past and practically own every piece out there. I upgrade to latest versions ONLY if the upgrade is going to benefit what I can make use of.  Sometimes, I don't upgrade because it will not serve any major benefit to what I'm already doing.

Like some software's upgrades are just that they added an FTP program so that you can upload the files to the server directly, added more to the 3D rendering features, etc.  Since I already use WS_FTP and would not need that function, and since I don't do 3D work, that wouldn't be a need, so in those cases, upgrading would be a waste of money for me.

Thus, I look at the situation at hand and if it will prove to be a major benefit and worthwhile to spend the money, then I'll buy the newest version.

In mussavcom's case, I saw "cost" as his major factor, so for the price and for what he can do with it (because Fireworks 3 can still do much of what he needs for the Photo editing, website graphics manipulation, slicing, etc.) that was a good deal for him (aside from the deal he will get from you, of course  :) ).

I have Photoshop, Corel Photo Paint and Fireworks and I have used all (but favor Photoshop and Corel Photo Paint).  I would have told mussavcom to go with Photoshop, however when I looked at all the prices on eBay, they were well out of his reach. Even the newer versions of Fireworks on eBay where somewhat expensive for him, so I figured Fireworks 3 for that price will do the job.  :)

*edited - Anyway, all is solved, because he will get the latest version for you now, anyhow.  Everybody happy? :)

Yes, I actually did take price into account when recommending Fireworks, since I considered Photoshop before I made the recommendation but found it to be too expensive as the educational versions of both differ significantly in price.  Whereas Fireworks MX 2004 costs $99-$119 (depending on where you purchase it) for the educational version, Photoshop costs $199-$249 for the education one.  I have both of them, and actually use Fireworks more b/c it integrates with Dreamweaver. The thing to note, however, is that he is a student, so he can get the education priced ones.  He doesn't have to pay the overpriced regular cost.  I think that $30 for Fireworks 3 is overpriced when you can get Fireworks MX 2004 for $99 as a student.

leighsww, I'm not sure that he wants my copy, though, since he hasn't told me he does. He might have already purchased the other one, since I hear those eBay auctions are addictive (thank goodness I haven't ever done them or I wouldn't have enough time to spend here doing important stuff).

Hmmm.  I doubt that he would buy the eBay version if he can get the lastest version from you for FREE with only having to pay shipping.

You'll probably hear back from him later.  :thumb:

Yeah, not to mention the fact that what copy he would be getting is slightly different than what I said, since when I made the offer I didn't even think that it isn't just Fireworks.  He would actually get Macromedia Studio MX (Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Freehand, and Coldfusion).  It is too expensive to purchase Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Flash separately (the only 3 of the programs I use), so I always get Studio.

Jwink, somehow I knew you were going to be the one to ask me that...

I used Fireworks for mine, but since you have to convert them to jpg to view online (rather than keeping them as a psd, png, or whatever format the graphics application uses by default), it is fine whatever program you use.  We'll all just pretend you did it in Fireworks.  :)

Hehe no problem... my friend found out about OC when he was talking to some tablet users on MIRC... (tablet being a graphics tablet input device for the computer, not the drug kind...)
He and others I talked to couldn't say enough good things about the program...
I agree when I tried it... I think its around 50 bucks, a few hundred less than others, easy to use, fast, and very cool.
After reading what I just read I think I advertised it...
Oops oh well good program nonetheless.

You CAN do a LOT more with PS standalone, but its better as an easier tool if you have Flash... kind of easier to use.

Post by: Danielle on January 01, 2004, 11:34:39 AM
Yes, that is why I use Fireworks as I noted earlier, I use Dreamweaver and some Flash, so Fireworks integrates with both of them.  Also, if you are used to Macromedia products, the menus are pretty easy to use as well since you know how they are going to be grouped.  Also, Adobe's menus are not exactly easy to figure out sometimes for where things will be located, so beginners can have difficulty in figuring out where things are in Adobe products.  This isn't just PhotoShop, but Acrobat, GoLive, etc. for good examples on how Adobe menus aren't exactly user friendly.

Hi Jwink,

I actually did want to give the effect of heat emiting from the saucer causing the pavement to appear like it is bending (similar to heat on a very warm day with the sun making the highway appear to be shifting...I hope you understand what I am talking about here).  Alternatively, it is the time dimensional forces of the craft which have it partially in this space and partially in another that is affecting objects around it.

Also, since I am a crummy artist, this effect was easier to do then make it look normal.  :)

My alien race is related to the one above, but we have far cooler space crafts that are invisible.  In fact, this is the reason I can't show one to you.

as in... bootleg?
cough cough yarg pirate.

What do you mean?  If you are refering to my comment about .dll files, this is a running joke regarding me being a forum bot.

The illegal use of pirate software is not condoned by any member of the Lunar Pages team.

I personally have a serious dislike of the pirate software market, as anyone who has read some of my posts on E-Bay sales will realise.  Not just blantant copies, but also NFR product resales, sales of OEM software against the distribution terms and so forth.

Hush, is this your entry into the Fireworks Blowout?  :? You have certainly done a good job of making changes to the pic.  :)

Maybe Hush is infected with the W32/Looney.Gooney@LF virus.  I heard that virus was like food poisoning for bots.

We might need to call in robeo to give Hush a good flushing out. Where's robeo?  He's never around when you need him. Is he reading his Reader's Digest again?

Well, he's never gonna reach his 2000 flushes at the rate he's going.

He said he was going to work on the pic on the previous page with the kid and the policeman tonight, then he posted the pic above, so I am just complimenting him on doing such a fine job making changes to it.  :poke:

Sorry following a reboot and reinstall of essential system files, I have now removed the rogue humour files from my core directive and am back online.

I have finally decided on my changes to your image, and will take a few hours... Post it when it's done  :D

Okay here's mine.  If anyone is interested (cue tumbleweed) the graffiti on the wall says:
Due to cut backs at division headquarters
Some of our fine Police officers have been
reduced to alternate means of transport.

You can't read it to well, because I wanted to put the tree and shadow back on top of it to help it fit in  :D

Thanks the right wing.
Economy good = profit margins bigger for corporations because
workers = pay cuts or jobless.
It's a big scam, the 5th dimension says.
Nice Pic.
Need horses lol.

That is correct sir, this document means that I can take your pony for my use, as the police department can no longer afford gas for my bike.

Hi Hush,

These are great ideas you are coming up with for the pic. Even without the shadow, the pony is nice. I always wanted a pony of my own.  :)

mussavcom, sorry I didn't notice your pic on the previous page. I missed it somehow when Hush did his.  When I was going through to read previous posts, I just saw it.  It is really good.  You shouldn't apologize at all. Cool job.  As good as I do most of the time actually, since I am still pretty new at doing graphics myself.

Thanks

No, I just want to get better at graphic designing, and the only way to do that is to practice.

Yes, that's exactly right, mussavcom.

But how can you get any better when you have already reached absolute "perfection", my perfect-little-genius-part-timer-slave mussavcom?

You excel at everything you do, so keep up the good work!!  :thumb:  :yey:
